It has been a while since my last post (been working on my dissertation proposal), and I’ve given a lot of thought to what my next series should emphasize. My focus for the coming weeks will be on leader introspection and self-reflection because I believe that all leaders should examine themselves, their feelings, attitudes, and beliefs if they are going to effectively lead others.
I have come up with a list of seven questions that I think every leader needs to answer. Why seven? It’s my favorite number. Seriously. I know that’s not very scientific or thought-provoking, but I like the number 7. However, I also believe that it signifies excellence and completeness.
How did I come up with these questions? Based on my experience, reading, intuition, and observation. I think each of these questions points to an essential aspect of effective leadership.
So, here are the 7 questions:
1) Are you prepared?
2) Are you teachable?
3) Are you insecure?
4) Are you aware?
5) Are you listening?
6) Are you afraid?
7) Are you leading?
Simple. Three words for each question. I like keeping things simple. But you know what? Some of the most seemingly simple questions are often the most difficult to answer.
In the coming weeks, I challenge you to examine these questions and determine where you might be deficient as a leader. Just because you are lacking in an area does not mean you have to stay that way. Leadership is all about getting better, and it’s a constant pursuit. I hope you will join me in this pursuit of excellence!
Next post… “Are you prepared?” Look for it soon!
